NNS Job Shadowing

What is Job Shadowing?

Job shadowing has been defined as "typically a part of career exploration activities in late middle and early high school. A student follows an employee at a firm for one or more days to learn about a particular occupation or industry. Job shadowing can help students explore a range of career objectives and select a career major for the latter part of high school."

Because job shadowing is aimed at helping a student make educated decisions about career choices, students observe only and may not be engaged in productive work at the workplace.

E82 Reactor Services EngineeringScience, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

The E82 Reactor Services Engineering department provides job shadowing participants the opportunity to shadow engineers and designers and witness firsthand their day-to-day activities as well as tour with operations engineers to see some of the equipment they use to complete those day-to-day activities.

Participants will see what engineering outside of the classroom is all about and how mathematical concepts, design creativity, decision making, organization, and communication skills are utilized in the resolution of engineering issues.

Participants will also have hands-on demonstrations of how high tech computer analysis software can help design and analyze tools and equipment which will be used to refuel the aircraft carrier’s nuclear reactors.

Finally, participants will see how these designs can be sent to a Rapid Prototype Machine to produce a solid plastic scale model. A tour with operations engineers will also take place, where the student will be able to see some of this equipment being used.
