Grade Overview

Elementary Schools Build AWARENESS

Elementary Schools build awareness of Career Pathways and develop Career Readiness Skills.

In elementary school, NNPS students:

  • Begin developing an awareness of “self” and their own unique, personal characteristics, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses
  • Develop an awareness of the relationship between school and the world of work
  • Develop an understanding of the relationship between work and money
  • Appreciate the contributions of various occupations to self and the community
  • Understand the existence of a broad array of career options
  • Elementary School Framework

At the Elementary Level:

  • Principals conduct annual Career Pathways training
  • School Counselors teach grade specific lesson focused on Career Readiness Skills
  • Each teacher hosts at least one parent or community friend career speaker per year
  • Each school hosts a PTA function with a Career Pathways focus
  • Each school hosts an Annual Career Fair with parents and/or community friends as presenters
  • 4th and 5th grade students complete the Virginia Career View Inventory, and School Counselors conference with students and parents to discuss career interests and resources

Middle Schools Support EXPLORATION

Middle Schools support exploration of Career Pathways and develop Career Readiness Skills.

In middle school, NNPS students:

  • Identify the relationship of course content, educational achievement, and career choices
  • Identify personal preferences, skills, and interests that influence career choices and success
  • Understand the career readiness skills and behaviors essential to success in the job market (e.g. punctuality, courtesy, appropriate dress and language, and hard work)
  • Demonstrate Career Readiness Skills such as individual initiative, teamwork, problem solving, organization, and effective communication
  • Develop financial literacy skills
  • Demonstrate awareness of the educational, vocational, and technical training opportunities available in high school
  • Middle School Framework

At the Middle School Level:

  • Principals conduct annual Career Pathways training
  • Each school has a substantive partnership with one large company
  • Students build portfolio skills and add three meaningful artifacts to their Career Pathways portfolio
  • Each 6th grade team has a Career Pathways speaker and a career field trip with a student reflection component
  • 7th graders host an annual student-generated Career Fair, (at which students select, research, and present careers), and explore the Career Café
  • By the end of the first semester, all 8th graders complete the Kuder Assessment. School Counselors then conference with students and parents to discuss the Kuder Assessment results

High Schools Provide OPPORTUNITIES

High Schools provide opportunities to experience the world of work and to apply Career Readiness Skills.

In high school, NNPS students:

  • Understand the value of ethical standards and behavior in education and the workplace
  • Understand how work and leisure interests can help to achieve personal success and satisfaction
  • Understand how the changing workplace requires lifelong learning, flexibility, and the acquisition of new skills
  • Apply financial literacy skills and concepts
  • Demonstrate skills involved in locating, using, and interpreting a variety of educational resources, including the Internet
  • Apply decision making skills to career planning educational resources, including the Internet
  • High School Framework

At the High School Level:

  • Principals conduct annual Career Pathways training
  • Students build portfolio skills in the 9th and 10th grade and add three meaningful artifacts to their portfolios
  • 10th graders have 100% participation in a Career Café or work site opportunity
  • 11th and 12th graders have at least 20% participation in Internships, Dual Enrollment, Career Related Club, or Community Service Experience
