Hilton Elementary named Blue Ribbon school

(September 15, 2009) -- Hilton Elementary School has been named a 2009 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The award honors schools that are either academically superior, or have made dramatic gains in student achievement and helped close gaps in achievement among minority and disadvantaged students. In addition, schools must meet Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, in reading (language arts) and mathematics.
                                                                                                                                               
The awards were announced on Tuesday, September 15, by U. S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.

Hilton is one of six public elementary schools in Virginia, and one of only 264 schools in the country to achieve this honor. The school will be honored at an awards ceremony on November 3 in Washington, DC.
