Full accreditation for ALL Newport News Public Schools

(August 10, 2010) - Based on an analysis of the 2009-2010 Standards of Learning (SOL) test results, all Newport News Public Schools will earn full SOL accreditation for the second year in a row.

Test scores released by the Virginia Department of Education indicate that all schools met or exceeded the benchmarks set by the state. Although official accreditation results will be announced in the fall, the test results show:

• All 39 schools met the benchmarks for full accreditation.

• In Literacy:
• 18 elementary schools had pass rates at 80 percent or better with 4 at 90 percent or better.
• All middle schools had pass rates at 80 percent or better with 2 at 90 percent or better.
• All high schools had pass rates at 80 percent or better with 3 at 90 percent or better.

• In Math:
• 22 elementary schools had pass rates at 80 percent or better.
• 6 middle schools had pass rates at 80 percent or better.
• 3 high schools had pass rates at 80 percent or better.

"Earning full accreditation for two years in a row indicates our students, teachers and families are working hard to meet and exceed standards established by the state," said Dr. Ashby C. Kilgore, superintendent of Newport News Public Schools.

"Our next step will be to analyze these results to ensure that we continue to increase achievement levels and help all students become college, career and citizen ready," said Kilgore.
