(06/23/2015) - Jamie Plecker, a Heritage High School health and physical education teacher, was recently selected as the third place SADD National Advisor of the Year.
SADD, or Students Against Destructive Decisions, is a national peer-to-peer education, prevention and activism organization dedicated to preventing teens from making destructive decisions.
Dawn Teixeira, president and CEO of SADD, Inc., stated that Plecker's work at Heritage High School "exemplified our idea of a successful SADD advisor. Our panel of judges found particularly impressive (her) commitment to the SADD mission and principles through (her) work both at school and in the community."
Under Plecker's guidance, the Heritage High School Chapter of SADD has become the largest student led organization at the school. The diverse student group creates and implements monthly activities that focus attention on healthy and safe student development. The Heritage chapter organized Red Ribbon Week activities, National Kick (cigarette) Butts Day events and several alcohol awareness campaigns.
The chapter's Seatbelts Save activities boasted the second highest increase in seatbelt usage in the Get-It-Together Seatbelt campaign among all Hampton Roads high schools.
Heritage chapter members have also volunteered for the Salvation Army and the Newport News One City Marathon
Plecker will receive the award during the SADD National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, June 28-July 1.
