Free flu vaccine available to students in October
NNPS partners with Health Hero Organization to offer free flu vaccine to students

(09/21/2015) -Newport News Public Schools is partnering with the Health Hero organization to provide free flu vaccinations to all students (who do not have chronic health conditions) with signed parental consent.Health Hero will conduct onsite FluMist clinics at each school during mid-October (see schedule below). Students who are unable to receive the FluMist, which is sprayed into the nose, may receive the flu shot.

Permission forms for the free flu clinics were distributed to all students during the first week of school.Families are encouraged to review the information and register their students.Permission forms will be accepted up to the day of your school's clinic, but early registration is appreciated for accurate counts. Permission forms may also be downloaded here.

If health insurance coverage is available to your family, Health Hero will file the claim.Parents/guardians are asked to answer the insurance questions on the consent form. There is no cost or additional paperwork, and parents/guardians are not required to be at school when the spray is given to the student.

Since its roll-out in 2011, Health Hero has immunized over 100,000 students during school with the nasal spray flu vaccine.Their goal is to make immunizations readily available to any child regardless of insurance coverage.

Influenza is among the leading causes of vaccine-preventable illness and mortality. The positive impact of improving vaccination rates will be felt by the children who directly participate in the program, their families, their classmates and all school personnel.

By working together, the spread of flu at school and in the community can be minimized.

For more information about the clinic, contact your school nurse. For more information about Health Hero, go to www.HealthHeroUSA.com.
