Superintendent named Urban League MLK Community Leader
Dr. Ashby Kilgore
(01/22/2016) - Dr. Ashby Kilgore, superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, was honored for her educational leadership and achievements during the Urban League of Hampton Roads' annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Leaders' Breakfast on January 18 at Norfolk State University.
Dr. Kilgore has enhanced academic opportunities for all students. Under her leadership, access to gifted education programs has increased, more students have enrolled in advanced math and science coursework, and more students are taking high school Advanced Placement and honors courses.
During her tenure, Dr. Kilgore has championed 21st century schools by establishing a curriculum that builds the skills, knowledge and expertise students need to be successful; launching the Career Pathways program and STEM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education); and extending learning opportunities outside of the school day.
Begun in 1984, the Urban League of Hampton Roads' Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders' awards are presented to individuals or groups who promote positive images, exemplify community service, demonstrate the values that model those of Dr. King and show evidence of the impact their contributions make in the lives of others.
