Pre-K & elementary families invited to Wake Up & Read event

(01/04/2016) -Join Newport News Public Schools for a variety of hands-on activities that inspire a lifelong love of reading. Preschool and elementary school students and their families are invited to Wake Up and Read from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Crittenden Middle School, 6158 Jefferson Avenue.

The interactive program will include a read-a-thon for second and third-grade students, a Battle of the Books for fourth and fifth-grade students, an imagination playground station for preschool through first-grade students, local authors, a coffee house featuring a poetry slam, digital literacy stations, arts and crafts and English-as-a-Second Language Interactive Zones. Each student in attendance will receive a free book.

Free bus transportation will be provided for families every 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from the following locations:

  • Peninsula Boys and Girls Clubs, 429 Thorncliff Drive
  • Courthouse Green Townhomes, Old Courthouse Way and Hustings Lane
  • Warwick Mobile Homes, 12095 Jefferson Avenue
  • South Morrison Family Education Center, 746 Adams Drive
  • An Achievable Dream Academy, 726 16th Street
  • Doris Miller Community Center, 2814 Wickham Avenue
  • Ivy Baptist Church, 50 Maple Avenue
  • Living Waters Church, 15611 Warwick Boulevard, and
  • Newsome Park Elementary School, 4200 Marshall Avenue.
