Elementary students work as aeronautical engineers in design challenge

(06/15/2017) -Newport News elementary students constructed airplanes using their knowledge of the properties of flight in the latest Engineering Design Challenge held on June 9.

The challenge gave students the opportunity to work alongside student mentors from Denbigh High School's Aviation Academy and experts from the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. The second and third-grade students learned about what led to the creation of the first airplane by the Wright Brothers and the forces that act on an airplane while it's in flight. Using the materials provided, the student teams were giving the task of constructing an airplane that could glide the farthest distance and land on the runway.

The design challenge, High Flyers, was sponsored by Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Students were given a specified amount of time to brainstorm with their teammates, draft their designs, and build and test their planes before presenting it to the judges. Teams earned points on the distance the plane traveled and its ability to land on the runway. The team from Deer Park Elementary School placed first; Lee Hall Elementary' s team took second place and Jenkins Elementary placed third in the High Flyers challenge.

The Design Challenge is part of the school district's ongoing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education initiative.
