Two NNPS high schools earn gold medal status in Get It Together Seatbelt Challenge

(03/28/2018) -Students from Heritage and Woodside high schools helped their schools earn Gold Medal status in this year's Get It Together High School Seatbelt Challenge. The challenge encourages high school students to increase seatbelt use and reduce distracted driving amongst their peers. To earn Gold Medal status, schools had to earn a minimum of 1,000 activity points and increase seat belt usage. NNPS was the only school division in the region to have two schools earn Gold status.

Heritage High School's Students Against Destructive Decisions Club hosted seatbelt information tables at athletic events giving students the opportunity to sign pledges, use fatal vision goggles and meet crash dummies Vince and Larry. Students also posted messages at parking lot entrances, conducted regular seatbelt checks in the morning and produced two public service announcements on distracted driving and seatbelt use. At the end of the challenge, seat belt use increased 25.45% and Heritage earned over 1,200 activity points.

Woodside High School's Seatbelt Club and Driver's Education classes worked to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a seat belt by planning and implementing various school-wide activities. Students held poster contests, wrote chalk messages, and signed pledges to always buckle up. Working with the communications magnet students and staff, the clubs created several videos and public service announcements. At the conclusion of the challenge, Woodside students had a 17.6% increase with over 98.2% of the student population using their seat belts and earned 2,175 activity points, the highest of any high school participating in the challenge.
