NNPS Odyssey of the Mind teams advance to world competition
Posted: May 17, 2018
Three Newport News teams will compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals Tournament at Iowa State University May 23-26, 2018 after earning top honors at the state tournament.
Teams from An Achievable Dream Academy and Woodside High School won first place in their division, and Warwick High School earned a Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award for their script for Classics...Mockumentary! Seriously?, advancing the teams to the world finals.
In the problem titled, A Stellar Hangout, the teams from An Achievable Dream Academy and Woodside created a comedic performance centered on a science fiction hangout where different types of creatures from across the galaxy stop to eat, refuel and relax. The teams were required to create original creatures and foods, and search for space treasure. A worker character, entertainment and a futuristic map at the hangout had to be included in the performance.
The Warwick high team selected a literary classic and presented different characters in a humorous documentary-style performance with additional, denied, exaggerated and disputed details. The team's problem, Classics...Mockumentary! Seriously?, had to include interviews, behind-the-scenes "clips" and voice-overs that take the audience through the story and present events as they "really" took place.
At the world competition, the teams from An Achievable Dream Academy, Woodside and Warwick will join other state and international champions from across the globe. The student teams will participate in a Parade of Nations during the opening ceremonies, the float and banner parade, an international festival, a creativity festival, and the tradition of trading state and international pins with other participants.
Six Odyssey of the Mind teams represented NNPS at the state competition. Teams from An Achievable Dream Academy, Nelson Elementary, Passage Middle, Warwick High and two teams from Woodside High competed in the problem-solving event; all teams earned a fourth place finish or higher.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.
