NNPS partners with Health Hero to offer free flu vaccine to students

School clinics scheduled in October

Posted: September 27, 2018

Newport News Public Schools is again partnering with the Health Hero organization to provide free flu vaccinations to all students with signed parental consent. Health Hero will conduct onsite flu shot clinics at each school October 1 - 4 (see schedule below).

Parental Consent forms for the free flu clinics were distributed to all students in early September. Families are encouraged to review the information and register their students. Consent forms will be accepted up to the day of your school's clinic, but early registration is appreciated for accurate counts. Download permission form in either English or Spanish:

If health insurance coverage is available to your family, Health Hero will file the claim. Parents/guardians are asked to answer the insurance questions on the permission form. There is no cost or additional paperwork, and parents/guardians are not required to be at school when the flu shot is given to the student.

Since its roll-out in 2011, Health Hero has immunized over one million students. Their goal is to make immunizations readily available to any child regardless of insurance coverage.

Influenza is among the leading causes of vaccine-preventable illness and mortality. The positive impact of improving vaccination rates will be felt by the children who directly participate in the program, their families, their classmates and all school employees.

Working together, we can decrease the spread of flu at school and in the community.
