21st Century Learning and Leading

How is Newport News Public Schools preparing youth to excel in the 21st Century landscape?

NNPS is preparing youth to excel by providing students with strong foundations in the basics of reading, writing and math and focusing on teaching the New Basics of the 21st Century. The 21st Century classroom is about going beyond the requirements of the state Standards of Learning and teaching students how to live and work in a global economy.

NNPS is using the New Basics to encourage youth to be leaders, entrepreneurs, creative, ethical, socially responsible and have the ability to adapt and use emerging technology to communicate and collaborate.

NNPS is creating classrooms where learning is a collaborative process between peers and between student and teacher and where students are engaged and are a stake holder in their education.

The New Basics of the 21st Century classroom include:

  • Informational Literacy
  • Economic Literacy
  • Scientific Literacy
  • Technological Literacy
  • Global Awareness
  • Multicultural Literacy
  • Civic Responsibility
  • Career Readiness
