Career Pathways Business Partner, Newport News Shipbuilding
The partnership between a school and a business provides a unique opportunity for the business to contribute directly to the school experience of the youth who are just beginning to formulate their dreams for the future. A partnership can take many forms and will be flexible to accommodate a wide range of activity by the business.
Newport News Shipbuilding (a division of Huntington Ingalls) is working with Newport News Public Schools to mentor students and provide opportunities to experience future careers.
Speakers Bureau
The Speakers Bureau provides informed professionals to volunteer in the Newport News schools to give engaging presentations to students of all grade levels. The goal is to expose students to a wide range of career possibilities.
Huntington Middle School Partnership
As a business partner, NNSB is partnering with Huntington Middle School for year-round presence and participation in community events hosted by the school including the Apprentice School Career Readiness Team, tutoring, club activities, career fairs, and more.
Club Activities
Club/Activity volunteers from NNSB meet with students for fun, problem-solving activities to provide exposure to the different careers available within Newport News Shipbuilding and also to develop Career Readiness skills.
Job Shadowing
Job shadowing can help students explore a range of career objectives and select a career major for the latter part of high school. A student follows an employee for one or more days to learn about a particular occupation or industry.
Worksite Opportunities
A Worksite Opportunity (WSO) is a way to expose students, at varying educational stages, to the world of work as well as provide them the opportunity to explore potential career opportunities within the visited business.
Internships
Newport News Shipbuilding provides internship opportunities to students and teachers that will transfer classroom knowledge to real life work experiences at NNSB.
Annual SNAME Boat Design Competition
Opportunities to apply science and math to a real world problem about shipbuilding is offered for both the elementary and high school groups.
