Three NN schools place in SeaPerch Competition

(03/17/2014) -Three Newport News Public Schools teams competed in the second annual Tidewater SeaPerch District Competition on Saturday, March 15 at the Midtown Community Center in Newport News.

SeaPerch is an underwater robotics program that provides teachers and students with the materials necessary to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROVs are made from accessible parts and teach basic engineering and science concepts. Teams from numerous school divisions competed in two pool events and presented their projects to a panel comprised of engineers from Old Dominion University, the U.S. Navy and local businesses. Team JAB from an Achievable Dream Middle School placed first in the middle-school level Display and Interview portion of the competition. The Hydrobots team from Warwick High School placed third in the high-school level Obstacle Course - Stock Class portion and Heritage High School's Club Jackson team placed third in the Deep Water Retrieval Course - Stock Class. Warwick's Enginuity team placed third in the Display and Interview portion for high schools.

Displays at the competition by the U.S. Navy and Chesapeake Diving showed students the real world application of diving and the use of underwater ROVs as well as career possibilities in underwater robotics. Congratulations to all of our NNPS teams!
