Congratulations to the 2014-2015 teachers of the year

(May 12, 2014) - Newport News Public Schools’ 2014-2015 Teachers of the Year were honored at a banquet May 1. The evening also brought the announcement of the elementary, middle, high school and NNPS Teacher of the Year.

District Elementary School Teacher of the Year

Tina Turner, a third grade teacher at Kiln Creek Elementary School, is named the District and Elementary School Teacher of the Year. Turner, who has taught for 19 years, is a National Board Certified Teacher. Before joining the faculty at Kiln Creek, she taught at An Achievable Dream Academy and Hidenwood Elementary School.

“I am always looking to implement research based instructional methods into the classroom. By understanding human behavior and acknowledging the many different learning styles of my students, I am able to provide an environment that fosters my students’ desire to share ideas and support each other,” said Turner.

Turner is a member of the clinical faculty at Christopher Newport University and mentors graduate students. She volunteers each summer at the Hampton Roads Conference for Girls and Young Women.

Turner holds a Bachelor degree in psychology from Radford University, and has engaged in numerous professional development activities.

1st nameKim Bates
Middle School Teacher of the Year

Kim Bates, an Instructional Technology Coach at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School, is the Middle School Teacher of the Year. After completing Old Dominion University’s Career Switcher Program, education became Bates’ third career. She started her teaching career at Crittenden Middle School in technology education and has worked as a technology teacher at Heritage High School.

Bates coordinated the school district’s involvement with SeaPerch, an underwater remotely operated vehicle competition, and founded the Tidewater SeaPerch District Competition. She also created STEM (science, technology, engineer and mathematics education) Saturdays, which provides hands-on projects and learning opportunities for students at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School.

Bates has 10 years of teaching experience. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology at Virginia Tech University and has a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology from Old Dominion University.

1st nameAnthony Mata
High School Teacher of the Year

Anthony Mata, a music teacher at Woodside High School, is the High School Teacher of the Year. A 14-year educator, Mata teaches guitar (beginning through advanced) and musicianship. He says he didn’t plan to be a teacher, but after graduating college and being exposed to education, he was hooked.

A strong proponent of the performing arts, Mata coordinates and produces Woodside Jam, an annual variety show that showcases student musicians and dancers. Under his direction, the Woodside Guitar Orchestra has performed throughout the community to support food drives, Toys for Tots and other worthy causes.

Mata holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from Christopher Newport University.
