NNPS earns High School Innovation Planning Grant

(06/24/2015) -Newport News Public Schools has been awarded a Virginia Department of Education High School Innovation Planning Grant to establish an innovative two-year pilot program at Heritage High School that will create college, career and citizen-ready micro academies to provide students with flexible scheduling, additional online learning opportunities, expanded exploration of college and career options, job shadowing, and long-term internships.

Aimed at creating a third option for Heritage students who aren't in the Governor’s STEM Academy or the University magnet, the program will allow students to spend their freshman and sophomore years exploring career pathways in specific career clusters with the goal of pushing out into the community during their junior and senior years to apply what they have learned through social entrepreneurship opportunities and early career programs.

The four year program is progressive and is designed to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need, and that they have a clear understanding of the pathway to success in their chosen career.

The $50,000 grant, one of five awarded across the state, was announced by the Governor's Office on June 24. The grant program was established by the 2015 General Assembly and signed by Governor McAuliffe as part of the budget.
