Governor's STEM Academy program earns Exemplary Standards Award

(06/25/2015) - The modeling and simulation program at Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy has earned the 2015 Governor's Career and Technical Education Exemplary Standards Award.

The modeling and simulation program provides students with a rigorous, hands-on course of study in programming, advanced programming, digital simulation, and modeling and simulation. Students in this track of the Governor's STEM Academy, learn to develop web and mobile applications, in addition to gaining experience in computer animation by solving problems involving 3D object manipulation, texture mapping, lighting concepts and environmental geometry.

To be considered for the exemplary standards award, program administrators are required to submit documentation to a review committee demonstrating how the program meets each defined Virginia standard including challenging learning goals, current and relevant program content, alignment with industry standards, validation by Virginia business and industry representatives, and collaborations with external organizations. Following independent reviews of the documentation, qualifying programs receive site visits that include classroom observations and interviews with students, teachers and employers.

The Heritage Governor's STEM Academy program was recognized June 11 during the Career and Technical Education Creating Excellence Awards program in Richmond. Heritage staff received a $5,000 award from the Dominion Foundation to support the program and a congratulatory banner.
