Teachers lead the way
May 2-6 is Teacher Appreciation Week

(05/03/2016) -Each day in Newport News Public Schools, our educators work to ensure that all students graduate college, career and citizen-ready. From preschool to high school, our teachers partner with a diverse community of learners to build successful futures.

I am proud of our teachers. I am proud of their commitment to students, their motivation and their leadership. I am proud of the way they motivate students and create excitement about learning. I am proud of the way they develop students, pushing them to practice leadership and contribute to their school and city.

Newport News Public Schools' teacher-developed curriculum combines the Virginia's Standards of Learning with the school division's college, career and citizen-ready skills - information literacy, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and innovation, initiative and self-direction, social responsibility, and collaboration - to better prepare students for success as learners, future employees and contributing citizens. Our teachers use authentic, challenging tasks that mirror real world issues that allow students to explain, explore and apply their learning.

Teachers in Newport News Public Schools are not only dedicated to student learning, they are also committed to advancing their own expertise. Over 99% of NNPS teachers are designated as highly qualified by federal standards. Fifty-four percent of NNPS teachers have advanced studies degrees. And 63 educators are National Board Certified Teachers, considered the highest credential in teaching. In addition to graduate coursework and leadership development programs, dozens of Newport News educators participate in corporate and industry internship programs during the summer to connect real-world experiences to their classroom instruction.

We all owe some portion of our success to a teacher, a teacher who encouraged us, or inspired us to dig deeper or pursue something that we thought was out of our reach. Teachers not only educate us, they imprint our future. This month join me in thanking the many dedicated public school educators who work to ensure that every Newport News student graduates college, career and citizen-ready.
