High School Students: Earn a Free Computer!

(03/31/2017) -Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy and Virginia STAR are giving away free computers. High School students enrolled in Newport News Public Schools may earn a free computer by writing an essay on the topic "How will access to technology from home help me to become College, Career, and Citizen Ready?" Interested students must complete the registration form and 250 word essay, and submit it by the Friday, April 7, 2017 deadline.

The top entries will earn a computer with software that has been refurbished by students in the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy.

Virginia STAR or Virginia Student Training and Refurbishment Program, is a state-wide program that gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience repairing used computer equipment and earn IT repair certifications. Government agencies and private organizations donate surplus computers, monitor and other equipment to VA STAR and then the equipment is distributed to participating schools.

Students in the Computer Information Systems course at Heritage reseat computer hard drives, replace missing and broken parts, and install perating systems and software. When the computer systems are restored to good working condition, the students donate the computer systems to local students and families.

Heritage High School joined the Virginia STAR program in 2014. The school's student IT specialists have refurbished and donated 50 computers to local students.
