Aviation Academy awarded $40k grant for modeling and prototype lab
Arconic Foundation awards grant to promote STEM in manufacturing.

(12/04/2017) -Denbigh High School's Aviation Academy, a PRIME School (Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education), was awarded a $40,000 grant from Arconic Foundation to develop a modeling and prototype lab to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in manufacturing. The lab will support all four of the Aviation Academy's pathways: aviation technology, flight operations, aerospace engineering, and aviation security and safety.

The grant will provide students with new equipment including five iPad Pros; five laptop computers; five desktop 3D printers; four Ultimaker 3D Printers; a 3-in-1 machine for milling, drilling, or performing lathe operations; and two 3D scanners. Students will use the equipment to design and build models and prototypes, preparing them for engineering and advanced manufacturing.

The grant award will also be used to support the 2018 Summer LIFT (Learning Integrated with Flight and Technology) program for incoming Aviation Academy ninth-grade students. LIFT will introduce students to manufacturing in aerospace professions.

Thanks to the generosity of Arconic Foundation, the Aviation Academy has been awarded a total of $123,000 to support academic programs over the past four years.

About Denbigh High School's Aviation Academy

Denbigh High School's Aviation Academy is a highly specialized, four-year program with concentrated areas of study in aviation maintenance, aviation management and technology. Students take classes at the "airport campus" at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport; all other classes are conducted at Denbigh High School. The curriculum gives students a strong science, technology, engineering and mathematics foundation, as well as enhanced reading and writing skills. The magnet program is designed to develop leadership, citizenship and academic skills for highly motivated, well-prepared and dedicated high-school students. About SME

SME (formally the Society of Manufacturing Engineers) and the SME Education Foundation's PRIME initiative actively engages and builds a collaborative network between manufacturing students, educators, and industry to grow and train the next generation workforce while driving interest and awareness in manufacturing." PRIME represents a tailored approach to a strong regional model impacted by industry and bolstered by SME. Its educational initiative is designed to bring together organizations, businesses, and high schools in a community-based, partnered approach to advanced manufacturing/STEM education.

PRIME is anchored in providing high tech industry quality relative technologies and equipment along with teacher training to classrooms and labs. SME is also a partner in helping create and/or bolster student opportunities and pathways for students in the STEM fields. All of this is achieved with PRIME as a partner in your school and community.
