New superintendent and School Board members take oath of office

At the Newport News School Board meeting of June 19, 2018, new superintendent Dr. George Parker, III took his oath of office. Two new School Board members, Terri Best and Lisa Surles-Law, were also sworn in.
The School Board appointed Dr. Parker as Newport News Public Schools superintendent effective July 1, 2018. A four-year contract was approved earlier this month. Dr. Parker currently serves as the superintendent of Caroline County Public Schools in Virginia.
Dr. Parker's career in education began in 1983, following a four-year career in the Navy. He served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent of secondary schools in Virginia Beach City Public Schools before being named superintendent in Caroline County in 2015. He received his bachelor of arts degree in computer science from Norfolk State University; his master of arts degree in educational leadership from Norfolk State University, and his doctor of philosophy in education leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech. Dr. Parker brings a wealth of experience to Newport News Public Schools having served diverse student populations in Virginia Beach and Caroline County.
Terri L. Best will represent the South District on the School Board. She is an assistant principal at An Achievable Dream Academy. Best received her bachelor's degree from Hampton University, master's from Old Dominion University, and Ph.D. from Hampton University.
Lisa R. Surles-Law will represent the Central District. She is a science education administrator at Jefferson Lab. Surles-Law received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Hampton University.
The terms of the new superintendent and School Board members will begin July 1, 2018. The next board meeting will be at 9 a.m. on July 2. A chair and vice-chair will be selected at that time.
