NNPS Superintendent releases Entry Plan

Posted: August 9, 2018

Dr. George Parker, Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, released his Entry Plan today. The objectives in the Entry Plan will assist the Superintendent in establishing an understanding of the traditions, relationships and operations of Newport News Public Schools. Additionally, Dr. Parker's goal is to become acquainted with the community, partners and schools while remaining focused on teaching and learning in classrooms.

The Entry Plan is intended to chart a path for his first 100 days of service, while providing accountability to the School Board and community.

The Entry Plan was developed to assess the status of significant areas of the school division's current strategic plan and key leverage points. The plan is organized to evaluate the work of the following strategic supports that drive the school division's strategic plan: quality curriculum, accountability systems, financial resiliency, employee expertise and community connections. The plan will also analyze division readiness in the areas of school and student safety, and equity and opportunities.

"The plan will give me the opportunity to look, listen and learn from our community, stakeholders and students during my first months on the job...the information obtained during the entry planning process will ensure that future decisions are supported by a data-driven process," said Dr. Parker. "Together, with the community, we will establish Newport News Public Schools as a premier school division in the Commonwealth of Virginia."

At the conclusion of Dr. Parker's first 100 days, he will develop a Post-Entry Report which will include an assessment of the information obtained during the entry planning process and his recommendations for moving the work of the school division's strategic plan forward.

The Newport News School Board appointed Dr. Parker as Superintendent in May 2018. He previously served as superintendent of Caroline County Public Schools. He has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent during his 25-year career in education.
