Deer Park and Nelson Elementary Schools earn VIP Awards

Deer Park Elementary and Nelson Elementary have earned 2019 Virginia Index of Performance Awards for achieving accreditation and exceeding excellence goals established by the Governor and the Board of Education. Schools earn recognition based on student performance during the previous academic year and participation in the Governor's Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard Awards program.

Deer Park earned the Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award, the second highest honor in the VIP program. Deer Park exceeded all state and federal accountability student performance standards in reading and math and had a significant number of students demonstrate advanced proficiency and proficiency on all Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. Ninety-four percent of Deer Park students passed the reading SOL test with 70 percent earning passed proficient and 24 percent achieving passed advanced status. Deer Park students earned a 91 percent pass rate on the math SOL test with 63 percent earning passed proficient and 28 percent earning passed advanced status.

Nelson earned the Virginia Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award for meeting all state and federal benchmarks for student performance and making progress toward the goals of the Governor and the Board of Education. Eighty-five percent of Nelson students passed the reading SOL test with 53 percent earning passed proficient and 32 percent achieving passed advanced status. Nelson students earned an 85 percent pass rate on the math SOL test with 58 percent earning passed proficient and 28 percent earning passed advanced status.

Deer Park and Nelson are among 270 schools in the state to earn recognition in the VIP awards program. This recognition marks the tenth time that Deer Park has earned recognition in this program; Nelson is a first-time honoree in the statewide program.
