Archers celebrate victory and prepare to compete at State Tournament

Four Newport News Schools archery teams and five individual archers qualified to compete on March 14 in Doswell at the Virginia tournament sponsored by the National Archery in the Schools Program.

Teams from Menchville High, Gildersleeve Middle, and Richneck and B. C. Charles elementary schools won top honors at the regional tournament held Jan. 27 at Achievable Dream Middle and High School.

Avarie Cannon from Hines Middle, Ariana Robertson and Aaron Lin from Dozier Middle, Leah McAuliffe from Dutrow Elementary and Taylor Twitchell from Yates Elementary will compete as individuals at the state event.

Newport News archery teams have participated in NASP events since 2006. The National Archery in the Schools Program is designed to teach archery in grades 4-12 as part of the in-school curriculum.
