Food Assistance for All NNPS Families
Posted: May 29, 2020
Newport News Public Schools is participating in the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer program (P-EBT) as part of a food assistance plan approved by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service that is being implemented statewide by the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) and the Virginia Department of Education. P-EBT is designed as a supplement for families during the pandemic since daily at-school meals are not currently provided.
Since NNPS has implemented the Community Eligibility Program division-wide to ensure that all students have access to free breakfast and lunch, all NNPS families will receive P-EBT assistance that may be used to purchase food items anywhere SNAP benefits are accepted.
The Virginia Department of Social Services will issue benefits to families with a maximum total benefit of $376 per student.
NNPS families do not need to apply for this benefit. Families who currently receive SNAP benefits will have additional money added to their EBT card in the next few weeks. Families that do not currently receive SNAP benefits will receive a P-EBT card in the mail in the next four to six weeks. Families with multiple NNPS students living in the same household will receive one P-EBT card with benefits for all students.
Participation in this program is voluntary. If you choose not to participate in the program, you may dispose of the card by following the instructions.
If you have any questions about this benefit, call the Virginia Department of Social Services at (804) 726-7000.
