Clean School Award honorees recognized

(08/31/2017) -The custodial teams of Marshall Early Learning Center, Hilton Elementary School, B.T. Washington Middle School, Heritage High School and Enterprise Academy earned top honors in the 2017 Clean School Contest sponsored by Newport News Public Schools' Custodial Services Office.

School custodial teams are invited to participate in the contest each year to earn the "cleanest school" designation. A team of supervisors from Plant Services visited each participating school and randomly evaluated several classrooms, hallways, offices, and public spaces. Custodial Supervisor Marcella Bullock remarked that the competition at each level was very close this year.

The Marshall Early Learning Center team, consisting of Lead Custodian Charmin Wells, Linda Kelly and Vaughn Hicks earned the top ranking in the Early Childhood Center category.

At the elementary level, Hilton Elementary's custodial team of Lead Custodian Charlotte Green, Calvin Hendricks and Marvin Hunter finished on top.

The team at B.T. Washington Middle, composed of Lead custodian Larry Liggon, Christopher Daniels, Makesha Parks and Jimmy Rodriquez, earned top honors in the middle school category.

At the high school level, Heritage High School's custodial team of Lead Custodian Tammy Davis, Donald Page, Darlene George, Samuel Smith, Peggy Adams, George Neal, Demetrius Battle, Shirley Jones, Earl Mason, Darrin Tillery, Ernest Johnson and Timothy Johnson came out on top.

In the alternative school category, the team of Octavia Mack and Michael Tarply from Enterprise Academy earned the award.

The winning custodial teams were announced and recognized at their annual meeting in August.

NNPS custodians keep their schools safe and clean, and are an important part of the support team that assists students and staff each day.
