Newport News Education Foundation Names 2015 Wayne D. Lett Scholar

(05/14/2015) -Warwick High School senior Tanti Brownley was selected to receive the 2015 Wayne D. Lett Scholarship by The Newport News Education Foundation. The scholarship is a merit-based award given to a Newport News public school senior who plans to become a teacher.

Brownley, a student in the International Baccalaureate Program at Warwick High School, realized her passion for teaching after serving as a summer school counselor. After that week, she says, " I knew that my love for children, and my passion for helping further their learning made it obvious that I want to help students start on the path to achieving their goals." Brownley plans to attend George Mason University in the fall and major in Integrated Studies with a concentration in Elementary Education.

The Newport News Education Foundation administers the four-year scholarship as a tribute to Wayne D. Lett, Ed.D., a former superintendent of Newport News Public Schools. Upon graduation from college, recipients are offered employment as teachers in the Newport News school system, and must commit to teach in Newport News for three years after graduation. Recipients also have the option to complete a student teaching assignment in the school division. The Foundation has awarded 10 scholarships since the program's beginning in 2007.
