Music Technology Club at Huntington To produce CD of original Music
(December 19, 2007) - The Music Technology Club (MTC) at Huntington Middle School is an association of students and Larry Brian Binns, instructor/sponsor/volunteer, who meet twice a week. Their goal for this school year is to produce a quality CD of original music written, produced, performed and recorded by the student members of the MTC. Students pictured are Joshua Gatling, Rosetta Smith, Shane Lamury, and Jordan Flynn.
For the past five weeks the club has focused their efforts on the creative aspects of music production, specifically songwriting. Each member of the MTC will be contributing to at least one song that will be on the CD. Thus far, all songs are the result of the collaborative efforts of two or more members who have been assigned to work as a songwriting team, either as the lyricist or as the composer. It is truly remarkable to observe how 10-12 talented middle school students can set aside their egos and individual preferences as well as accept criticism and suggestions in order to perfect their craft. In just one month members have written four songs that are at various stages of development that are sure to be hits! Industry standard music software such as Finale, Sibelius, Cubase and Sound Forge are being used at various stages for notation and production.
There is also the business aspect of creating music with which the members are becoming familiarized. This business side of creating and recording music is often referred to as the "music industry". Like all industries there are organizational procedures and laws that have to be obeyed. Thus, each member of the MTC has been assigned to various departments that are typical of a professional music recording company such as A&R (Artists and Repertoire), legal, songwriting, production, recording and marketing. Members of the legal department, for instance, have the responsibility of registering all copyrights with the US Copyright Office and registering songs with a performing rights organization (PRO). The PRO that we are registering our songs with is ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers; www.ascap.com ). This is the same PRO that represents such stars as Coldplay, Jay-Z, Garth Brooks, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Dr. Dre, Madonna, Beyonce and Alicia Keys.
It is anticipated that the club will have 10-15 songs by February to begin recording our compilation CD. Stay tuned!
