Early Learning Initiative: Notice for Southeast NN
For Families in the Southeast Community with Children Starting Kindergarten in September 2014

(01/15/2014) -As we approach second semester, Newport News Public Schools is planning for the next school year and beyond. The school district is considering options to ensure that our youngest students receive a solid educational foundation in their primary years.

To better prepare our primary students, the school district is proposing to expand its early learning initiative to Marshall Early Childhood Center in September 2014. Staff at Marshall would educate students in preschool and kindergarten. This change would allow the school to create a two-year early learning center that focuses on reading, writing and mathematics.

This early learning initiative would move some students starting kindergarten in September 2014 who are now zoned for An Achievable Dream Academy, Magruder Primary and Newsome Park Elementary School to Marshall. Newsome Park Elementary School would no longer offer a kindergarten program.

Other proposed changes include moving some students who start kindergarten in 2014 who now reside in the current Magruder zone to An Achievable Dream Academy for kindergarten through second grade, and moving some students who are currently in the Achievable Dream attendance zone to Newsome Park Elementary School.

Please note that these proposed changes would only affect students who are beginning kindergarten in September 2014; these proposed changes would have no impact on students currently attending An Achievable Dream, Magruder or Newsome Park.

Community and family information meetings were held to share more information about the proposal and the plans to expand STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning in our schools.

The early learning proposal will be reviewed and submitted to the Newport News School Board at its meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in the administration building auditorium, 12465 Warwick Boulevard. A public hearing on this proposal will follow the presentation to the School Board on January 21.

Families and community members are invited to attend the meeting and provide comment on the proposal. For more information, call 591-4500.
