Elementary students receive STAR Awards for service learning

(06/27/2017) -The Elementary School STAR Awards Ceremony recognized more than 230 students for their service learning on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Heritage High School. The STAR (Students Taking Action and Responsibility) Awards is a celebration of youth development in Newport News Public Schools.

Through service learning and volunteerism, all elementary school students are building their leadership, citizenship and teamwork skills. The STAR Awards program highlights and celebrates how NNPS students are learning to make a positive impact, in their schools and in their community.

An Achievable Dream Academy and Nelson Elementary School were honored with the inaugural STAND Award during the awards ceremony in recognition of their STAND ideals including student involvement in school clubs and activities, and encouraging positive school cultures. All Achievable Dream Academy students participate in a variety of clubs, and students have led numerous school-wide fundraisers, food drives, and environmental projects. All Nelson students join at least one club. Each Friday is "club day" and students meet and work together during the school day. Nelson students have also spear-headed numerous charity fundraisers and conservation projects.
