Woodside student named winner in PSA contest

Posted: April 24, 2018

Hannah Baird, a junior at Woodside High School, was named a winner in the public service announcement contest, presented by GEAR UP Virginia, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the Virginia Department of Education. The PSA had to promote the idea "There's more than one way to pay for college" by highlighting different strategies students and families can use to plan for and lower the cost of earning a college degree or certificate after high school. GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, prepares students to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

Baird's PSA, "Start Saving Now," informs students and families that it's never too late to start saving money for college.

Baird will be recognized at the Thursday, April 26, 2018 Virginia Board of Education meeting and her PSA will be broadcast on TV stations statewide and online. Baird was awarded a $100 Virginia529 Savings Account and tickets to Kings Dominion.

Woodside students Elizabeth Cambar and Brittney Evans earned honorable mentions in the PSA contest.
