NN School Board appoints new member to fill unexpired term

During a special meeting on January 10, the Newport News School Board appointed Maritsa Alger to fill the unexpired term in the Central District, which ends June 30, 2020.
Alger brings a wealth of education experience to the School Board. She retired from Norfolk Public Schools in July 2019 after having served as an elementary school principal for 15 years. During her 32-year career, she served as a teacher, inclusion specialist, building program specialist, assistant principal and principal.
She is a member of numerous professional and community organizations.
The Newport News School Board appointment fills the unexpired term of Shelly Simonds, who was elected to Virginia's House of Delegates in November.
