Woodside students sweep Woman’s Club of Newport News Art and Literature Contest

Four Woodside High School students earned top honors in the annual Woman's Club of Newport News Art and Literature Contest.  In the poetry division, Cierra Henley, a ninth grade student, placed first with her entry titled, "Camo Hat." Diamond Hicks, a tenth grade student, earned runner-up for her poem, "Umber." Melissa Downs' short story "Braving The Winter" earned first place for the tenth grader. Placing second in the short story category was senior Abigail Brown with her entry titled "Jingle Bells." At the award ceremony at the Main Street Library, first place winners read their entries aloud and received $65. Second place winners received $45. First place entries will be published in the Woman's Club of Newport News' March newsletter and will compete in the state competition in late spring/early summer.

The Art and Literature Contest sponsored by the Woman's Club of Newport News has been going on for more than 10 years and is open to all high school students. This year’s contest had more than 50 entries.
