Virtual Learning at Newport News Public Schools

Newport News Public Schools is excited to announce that we will welcome back all students for in-person instruction five days a week for the 2021-2022 school year. NNPS encourages students and families to "Return to Learn" in person in the fall, but realizes the continued need for additional virtual learning options. Remote learning due to the COVID-19 Pandemic will be offered for any K-12 student through the first semester. Rising 9th-12th grade students will also have an opportunity to apply for the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) program coordinated through Point Option High School.

Remote Pandemic Learning is for families that require a virtual option for the first semester of the 2021-22 school year. This is an option for K-8 families and 9th-12th grade students who do not want to apply for the Virtual Learning Academy. This option may impact magnet status for students who are currently enrolled in a Magnet School. All preschool students will be required to attend school in person, as we will not offer a virtual option.

Families interested in remote virtual learning for the first semester of 2021-22 should contact your child's school to indicate your interest no later than June 15, 2021.

The Virtual Learning Academy is a virtual learning program for rising 9th-12th grade students that requires a year-long commitment. As this school year has shown, some students thrive in an online or blended learning environment. The VLA program will include a blend of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent) instruction led by NNPS teachers and highly-qualified, licensed teachers from the Virtual Virginia program.
