Six teachers receive National Board Certification

(January 31, 2011) - Six Newport News Public Schools teachers have completed the process of earning National Board Certification in their respective specialties. The demanding National Board Certification process can take up to three years. It requires more than 300 hours spent putting together a “career portfolio” of teaching materials, student work, and multimedia examples. A reflective written component looks at teaching goals, methods, and results. The candidates also have to undergo an assessment.

Teachers need three years of experience and a valid Virginia license before applying. (The program does not replace the state licensing program.) NNPS now claims 60 nationally board-certified teachers.

The newly certified teachers are:

  • Susan McAuliffe, Adolescent Young Adult  Physical Education, Enterprise Academy;
  • Kristin McDede, Early/Middle Childhood Physical Education, Hidenwood Elementary School;
  • William Peck, Early/Middle Childhood Physical Education, Carver Elementary School;
  • Marisol Morales, World Languages Other Than English, Warwick High School;
  • Judith Lowitz, Exceptional Needs, Crittenden Middle School;
  • Michael Koeniger, Adolescent Young Adult  Social Studies-History, An Achievable Dream Middle and High School.
