Denbigh High Aviation Academy Wins Grants for STEM Education
(March 16, 2012) - The Denbigh High School Aviation Academy has been awarded three grants totaling $3,545 to strengthen STEM-related coursework and to promote aviation career pathways.
A $2,000 grant was awarded by the Virginia Department of Education to promote their Virginia Career Cluster – Best Practice Video. This video will promote the growing need of college bound graduates in the industry of Aviation that not only includes flight engineers and pilots, but other professions such as air traffic control personnel, airfield operation specialists, aircraft mechanics and aircraft cargo handling supervisors.
The Aviation Academy also received a mini grant from the Newport News Education Foundation and National Council of Jewish Women, plus a grant from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. Both grants will be used expand the Academy's efforts to provide classes with live interactive STEM-related lessons and guest speakers from NASA's Digital Learning Network. The equipment that will be purchased will include wireless webcams and headsets so that teachers and students alike can communicate with the scientists across the nation.
