NNPS graduates prepared for success
This week more than 1,800 students will graduate from Newport News Public Schools having completed a demanding course of study that ensures they are college, career and citizen-ready.
The Class of 2018 has earned over $51 million in awards and scholarships from universities, colleges and military institutions throughout the country. Nearly half of the graduates are earning an Advanced Studies Diploma, which requires an additional year of study in advance math, laboratory science and history/social science, and three years of study in a world language.
Newport News students also earned over 2,600 career and technical industry certifications giving them access to advanced post-secondary opportunities, and high-skilled internships and careers. Through the Early College program, dual-enrollment initiatives, International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and Honors courses, 85% of high school students were enrolled in rigorous coursework this school year. Students were also active in their school communities, with over 87% of all high school students participating in clubs, activities and sports, as part of the school division's Youth Development initiative.
Through innovative instruction and learning designed to build the skills, knowledge and expertise needed for 21st century success, the graduates of Newport News Public Schools are prepared for success.
An Achievable Dream High School held its commencement on Thursday, June 7, at the Ferguson Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
Five commencements will be held at the Hampton Coliseum. On Saturday, June 9, Woodside High School's ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.; Denbigh High School's commencement will be held at 2 p.m., followed by the ceremony for Heritage High School at 6:30 p.m.
On Sunday, June 10, the ceremony for Menchville High School will be held at 2 p.m. and Warwick High School's commencement will take place at 6 p.m.

2018 Top Graduates
Newport News Public Schools is proud to introduce the top graduates from each of its six high schools. These young men and women have been accepted to prestigious institutions of higher education and are among 1,800 students who have completed their high school education secure in the knowledge that Newport News Public Schools has prepared them to be college, career and citizen-ready.
