Part IV: Literacy Development

Literacy Experiences-Primary (PK-2)

In the primary grades, teachers foster a love for reading and develop student agency by crafting learning experiences that expand oral language and build foundational reading and writing skills for all students. Students acquire a strong foundation in phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension strategies. Students will receive explicit, systematic phonics instruction with immediate feedback, along with ample opportunity to practice their skills in appropriate text. Each day, students will engage in opportunities to write and draw, engage in meaningful exchanges to build language and engage with print and electronic resources to broaden their communication skills. These experiences allow students to further explore and apply the connections among letters, sounds, and words and how they work together to create meaning. Students are engaged in writing experiences to develop proficiency and apply skills in multiple modes of communication for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Literacy Experiences-Upper Elementary (3-5)

In the upper elementary grades, students build upon the foundational skills, further study the structure of words and language, and refine comprehension strategies. Students have reading opportunities that increase background knowledge and expand their vocabulary that support their ability to make connections and deepen their understanding across disciplines. These experiences increase student agency to select books that interest, challenge and develop their knowledge of the world while advancing their love for reading. Teachers will craft experiences that inform, engage, excite, and empower students to think critically so they can logically express their own thoughts and ideas through multiple modes of communication. Students are engaged in writing experiences to develop proficiency and apply skills in multiple modes of communication for a variety of purposes and audiences.

Literacy Experiences-Middle School (6-8)

In middle school, students continue to analyze what they read, examining paired passages with common themes, across a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, and cross-curricular texts.  Students encounter new information and deepen their learning through reading of nonfiction texts. Students' appreciation for literacy texts is enhanced by interaction and discussion with a broad array of classic and contemporary literature, which engages the reading skills of students and invites them to develop an appreciation for the power and the beauty of the written word. Students engage in texts that help them learn more about the experiences and lives of others, building background knowledge, enhancing empathy, and providing insights into the world and cultures of others. Students will be engaged in a variety of writing and media literacy experiences. They will develop proficiency and apply skills in multiple modes of communication for a variety of audiences and purposes, utilizing various aspects technology.

Literacy Experiences-High School (9-12)

In high school, students focus on the analysis of text, examining paired passages with common themes, across a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, and cross – curricular texts. There is a focus on the human experience through the reading and discussion of literature. Students continue to deepen their learning of the world around them through reading nonfiction text. Students' appreciation for literacy texts is enhanced by interaction and discussion with a broad array of classic and contemporary literature, which engages the reading skills of students and invites them to develop n appreciation for the power of the beauty of the written word. Students engage in texts that help them build background knowledge, enhance empathy, and provide insight into the world and cultures of others. Students will be engaged in a variety of writing opportunities, both academic and real-world, to include employment and college applications, as well as media literacy experiences. They will develop proficiency and apply skills in multiple modes of communication, with a focus on persuasion and argumentation, for a variety of audiences and purposes, utilizing various aspects of technology.

The Literacy PlaybookThe stages of literacy development provide a description of literacy experiences and academic progression from primary to secondary grade levels. The literacy playbook is a tool designed to help teachers plan and engage students in a variety of activities that support literacy development across grade levels and content areas.  The Literacy Playbook provides an overview of the strategy that links to the ELLevation Platform to include, but not limited to an explanation of the language domain, skill focus, graphic organizers, videos, and much more!

Profile Personas are portrayals of students characterized in realistic classroom settings during the stages of literacy development.  Personas bring focus, build empathy, and help guide personalization.  

In the four student personas, you will meet Sabastian, Aniya, Naija, and Bill.  A snapshot of each student's strengths, struggles/areas for growth, and the teacher's approach for helping the student thrive as a learner are highlighted.  In each persona, literacy strategies are embedded to build the student's skills and support learning in various content areas.  Additionally, the Profile of a LEARNER attributes and the 5Cs are also highlighted as a part of the teacher's approach to help each student succeed, especially those who are most vulnerable.
