Special Education supports instructional programs for students with disabilities in the division.

The Office of Special Education and Student Support Services for Newport News Public Schools serves students with disabilities, ages 2-21, who are found eligible for special education and related services by a multidisciplinary team. Services for identified students are provided in the least restrictive environment in a manner consistent with all applicable federal and state regulations.

Students may be eligible to receive special education services under fourteen disability categories as defined by Virginia regulations. View Special Education Disability Categories for more information about each disability category.

Learning more about the special education process allows families to more effectively collaborate with the division and school staff to provide the best possible learning environment for children with disabilities. The VDOE Guide to the Special Education Evaluation Process for Families is a collection of short videos that provide an overview of each step in the special education process.
