Plans for the 2021-2022 school year are underway
Posted: May 7, 2021
Newport News Public Schools is excited to announce that we will welcome back all students for in-person instruction five days a week for the 2021-2022 school year. NNPS encourages students and families to "Return to Learn" in person in the fall, but realizes the continued need for additional virtual learning options. Remote learning due to the COVID-19 Pandemic will be offered for any student in kindergarten through 12th grade through the first semester. Rising 9th-12th grade students will also have an opportunity to apply for the new Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) program within Point Option High School.
Remote Pandemic Learning
The Remote Pandemic Learning option is for families who prefer a virtual option for the first semester of the 2021-22 school year. This opportunity is available for students in grades kindergarten-8 and 9th-12th grade students who do not want to apply for the Virtual Learning Academy. All preschool students must attend school in person as no virtual instruction will be available. Families interested in remote virtual learning for the first semester of 2021-22 should contact their child's school to indicate their interest no later than June 15, 2021.
Virtual Learning Academy
The Virtual Learning [email protected] Option is a virtual learning program for rising 9th-12th grade students that requires a year-long commitment. The VLA program will include a blend of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent) instruction led by NNPS teachers and highly-qualified, licensed teachers from the Virtual Virginia program. Interested students should complete the self-assessment on the VLA website to determine if the Virtual Learning Academy would be a good fit. The VLA application will be available in StudentVUE on May 10, 2021. The deadline to apply for the 2021-2022 school year is Wednesday, May 26, 2021.
Students and families are invited to learn more by visiting the Virtual Learning Academy website and attending a virtual information session on Tuesday, May 11, at 6 p.m. Register here to attend and learn more about this engaging educational experience.
