Ceremony honors summer graduates

On August 2, students representing all five high schools in Newport News Public Schools marched in caps and gowns to accept their high school diplomas in a summer graduation ceremony at Warwick High School.

For some, this milestone was hard-won, and students crossed the stage with their families, teachers, administrators, counselors and graduation coaches at each school cheering for those they had encouraged and sometimes cajoled across the finish line.

Vanessa Stephens, who supervises NNPS graduation coaches, said, "Graduation is something to celebrate however and whenever it happens. There are inspiring stories in this group. This graduation is the result of a team effort of many educators in NNPS. Families are students’ biggest supporters, and it was a privilege to join with them to get their students across the stage."

Now these graduates are equipped for their next steps. Several have already been hired by Newport News Shipbuilding. Others are entering the military or enrolling in college or trade schools. Several will join the Youth Workforce.

The summer class of 2022 was joyful, and families celebrated their graduates' achievement with cheers, balloons, and lots of hugs and high fives. Congratulations, Class of 2022!
