Mayor's Book Club helps young readers start personal libraries

Posted: October 23, 2020

Since 2011, the Mayor's Book Club has provided Newport News students with books they may keep forever.

In September, pre-kindergarten students received copies of A Pocket for Corduroy, What Does It Mean to Be Green? and The Doorbell Rang.

The students will receive an additional book per month over the course of the school year.

Newport News Public Library is providing recordings of each book on its webpage. Viewers may enjoy Cynthia Temple, youth and community engagement manager, reading A Pocket for Corduroy (video below).

Imani Gill, a student at Watkins Early Childhood Center, was happy to receive books to keep from the Mayor's Book Club.
