Winter Sports Season Update
Posted: December 11, 2020
Based on the current increase in COVID-19 cases on the Peninsula, the nature of the contact associated with various competitive sports and recent guidance from the Peninsula Health District, the winter athletic competition season in the Peninsula District is being delayed. The wrestling season has been suspended for this school year.
As a result of the delay, the athletic schedule has been adjusted:
Winter Sports Practices and Tryouts
Practices and final team selection for winter sports shall occur no later than Monday, December 14, 2020.
Winter Sports Conditioning (December 15, 2020 - January 8, 2021)
Conditioning may occur; however, coaches will not make conditioning mandatory. Contact sports (such as basketball) which involve direct or prolonged close contact (for example, drills) are not permitted. Shared and personal equipment will not be permitted.
Winter Sports Competition
A final decision regarding the scheduling of winter sports competition will be made the week of January 11, 2021. The final decision will be based on COVID-19 metrics in the competition district areas and guidance from the Peninsula Health District.
The Virginia High School League strongly encourages all student-athletes to wear face masks during practices and competitions. In addition, a minimum of 10 feet of physical distancing is mandatory.
Questions about athletics or this update may be directed to the school Athletic Director.
