NNPS Names Seasoned Administrator as Director of Athletics

The Newport News School Board has appointed Lee Martin as the new director of student athletics. Martin brings of wealth of experience to the new position having served as a high school athletic director in Hampton City Schools for 15 years, as the chairman of the Peninsula District Athletic Directors Committee for six years, and as a regional representative for the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association for six years.

Martin began his career in education in 1993 as a high school physical education teacher; he has also served as an in-school suspension coordinator, a dean of students, and a middle and high school basketball official.

In his new role, Martin is responsible for developing, implementing and supervising a comprehensive athletic and activities program for Newport News Public Schools in accordance with Virginia High School League guidelines.

"I am excited to join the dynamic team at Newport News Public Schools and I am eager to work with the high school athletic directors, the student-athletes and their families. My goal is to move the athletic program to the next level," said Martin.

Based on Superintendent Dr. George Parker's recommendation, and subsequent School Board approval, Newport News Public Schools is expanding its middle school athletic program. "Lee Martin will be an asset to Newport News Public Schools. He's a former NNPS student-athlete and a graduate of this school division. With his vision and local ties, Mr. Martin will create a premier athletic program which will expand opportunities for our students."

Athletics and extra-curricular activities are two of the main components of Newport News Public Schools' youth development model, which engages students in all grades with their schools, communities, organizations and peer groups. As outlined in the NNPS Strategic Plan, Journey 2025, the school division will provide multiple opportunities for students to develop and grow through extracurricular activities. The goal is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to connect to school through at least one club, sport or activity.
