Newport News Public Schools students raised more than $17,000 for the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula's 2024 campaign. Student representatives from each school announced their school's total and presented checks to United Way officials at a celebration February 2 in the School Board Administration Building Auditorium.

Student leaders described how their schools held varied and creative fundraisers along with collecting monetary donations for the United Way, which supports organizations helping citizens needing assistance across the community.

"The total that we raised this afternoon proves that our school community is committed to providing for those families that are most in need in our community," said Rusty Fairheart, NNPS chief operations officer. "When we're asked about our next generation of leaders, it's easy for us to say that we're amongst them today.

"So we appreciate your leadership within your school, within the broader community and we encourage you to continue to provide service to your school and the community."
