Students light up the sea at Engineering Design Challenge
Posted: February 2, 2024
Fourth and fifth grade students representing each elementary school in Newport News Public Schools put their heads together to solve a surprise project.
The Engineering Design Challenge, which was themed Sea of Light, encouraged students to combine science and engineering as they devised a solution to a specific project presented on the spot. Students worked in teams to think critically, problem solve and innovate during the challenge February 2 at Newsome Park Elementary School Science, Technology and Math Magnet.
The Sea of Light challenge involved building a lighthouse with a light beam shining onto a pre-determined spot. The place winners were Richneck Elementary School in first place; Yates Elementary School took second place and third place went to General Stanford Elementary School.
The U.S. Coast Guard served as NNPS' community partner for the event. The Engineering Design Challenge is part of the school division's ongoing STEM education initiative.
