The Newport News Education Foundation celebrated the accomplishments of the top students in Newport News Public Schools at its annual Salute to Success Student Recognition Dinner on May 28 at the Marriott at City Center.

Those honored for their outstanding efforts towards becoming college, career, and citizen-ready included valedictorians; salutatorians; students who received National Merit Scholarship, National Hispanic Recognition and National African American Recognition; career and technical education students who received four or more work-based industry certifications; and top students in grades 9, 10 and 11.

Katie Collett, WAVY-TV 10 and FOX 43 morning and midday news anchor, served as speaker and emcee for the student presentations.

Mya J. Vincent, a graduating senior at Heritage High School, was recognized as the 2024 Wayne D. Lett Scholar. She received a $10,000 scholarship funded by donor support towards her tuition to major in elementary education at Old Dominion University.

As recipient, Vincent has committed to teach in NNPs for three consecutive years after graduation.

"With the kind of spirit and dedication she has demonstrated, we are glad to help her get started with a $10,000 scholarship from the Newport News Education Foundation and the Drs. Lett," said Dr. Robin Nelhuebel, as she made the presentation on behalf of the NNEF.

Virginia Educators Credit Union Scholars recipients were Heritage High School senior Marcel Williams and Warwick High School seniors Andrea Coronado, Shana Davenport and Jacquelin Ramos-Gonzalez.
