Valued and appreciated Newport News Public Schools employees who support every facet of students' educational experience and development received awards for their service.

An employee from each school and one from each of seven administrative departments received individual honors at the school division's Exemplary Support Staff of the Year banquet on May 30 at the Marriott at City Center.

"This evening really is about celebrating excellence in service to public education and to acknowledge work that often goes under-appreciated," said Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell.

"Tonight, we have the honor and privilege to recognize you, the people who provide the much-needed support that it takes to educate, mentor and guide over 25,000 students each day."

Chante Lawrence, a specialist in the Office of Special Education and Student Support Services, shared her other talents as a comedian to emcee the event. Rusty Fairheart, chief operations officer, provided congratulatory remarks about the importance of dedicated employees to schools running smoothly on a daily basis.

"You don't just report to work every day; you report to work to make a difference and your pride is displayed in all that you do," Fairheart said. "Thank you for showing great initiative, for supporting and assisting our students and colleagues, and for doing so with a willing spirit.

"Your contributions are immeasurable and will be felt for years to come."
