NNPS recognized as first K-12 Canvas Certified Institution

Posted: September 19, 2024

Educational software provider Instructure recognized Newport News Public Schools as a Canvas Certified Institution in September, making NNPS the first K-12 school division to ever receive the designation.

Canvas is a learning management system that simplifies teaching and learning activities and organizes student coursework in an online environment. NNPS teachers and students use Canvas to communicate and collaborate about schoolwork in a variety of ways.

NNPS received the Canvas certification after its Online Learning Systems team of Supervisor Daniel Barnhill and Specialists Kayla Reesey and Christopher Reynolds completed an intensive 18-week, three-course program to become Canvas Certified Technical Admins endorsed by Instructure. Additionally, 10% of full-time teachers, school and instructional technology staff have completed the Canvas Certified Educator program since NNPS started using Canvas in 2020.

"By becoming a vibrant community of Canvas Certified Educators, they have made the commitment to strengthening their Canvas use and amplifying instructional practices that aligned to learning outcomes and student needs," according to the certificate of recognition from Instructure.

"They are actively involved in making the shift from teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning while creating learning experiences in Canvas in ways that would not exist without the use of technology."

With this organizational designation, NNPS will receive invitations to collaborate with the Canvas Certified team, to network with current and future Canvas Certified Institutions, and receive recognition in the larger Canvas community.
